This morning we moved from uptown Bergen to Askoy Island, 8 tunnels and one big bridge from Bergen, about a 1/2 hour drive ….. Found the place okay but once again extremely narrow roads, steep fall on one side and huge stone walls on the other, driving manual on the right hand side is a bit tricky when you have to constantly pull to the right to let others pass.
We arrived about noon to another great place, the home is on a extension of the North Sea, we are right on the water in a recently converted apartment above the boathouse ( photos below ) it is quite built up on the waters edge with all types of water craft moored around the floating pontoons …… The tide seems to be about 2 plus metres and all the walkways to the various pontoons are on hinge systems to allow for the tide ……..
Sunday morning .
.Also Mother’s Day here in Norway ….. We left about 9:00am for a drive to the central Norway towns of Voss and a bit further Flaam ……. Flaam is the take off point for the Norway in a Nutshell excursions, people either train from Oslo to Myrdal, then board a smaller train through the mountains to Flaam, then they take a fjord ferry down to Bergen, or you can also do vice versa ….. We are catching the train on Tuesday to Oslo so will not go through Flaam so we thought we would love to explore this region.
It was about 190 klm drive past huge wide fjords, so much water, amazingly high sheer cliffs, beautiful countryside, not to mention never ending tunnels, one of which was 11 klm long tunnel then a 200 mtr gap and straight into a 5 klm tunnel, 16 klm of tunnel under a huge mountain, was a bit daunting !! We arrived in Voss first, had a walk around this lakeside town, already filling with motor homes and people enjoying this first warm day, it was about 22 degrees and to the Norwegians that’s shirts off & shorts time after a long snowy cold winter..Photos of Voss and surrounds ………..
After every walking around Voss we continued on through many more tunnels to Flaam, this is the place all the fjord tours start from ….. Beautifully created area in between towering near sheer cliffs at the end on the Flaam fjord.
Photos here from Flaam ……
And then we headed off back home, the ski fields were still covered in snow ………
